Current Programs:

Record Preservation Project

The WNYGS Microfilming Program is an effort to preserve old church, cemetery, and historical records in Western New York. After project review and approval by the Board, WNYGS will microfilm any records that have not previously been microfilmed. WNYGS will pay for the filming and will furnish the holder of the records with a copy of the film.

Please email if you have any information about Western New York records that have not been microfilmed.

Bible and Marriage Records Project

In its continuing work to make unique genealogical information available, the Society has been collecting and indexing member-submitted Bible and Marriage Records. The master index and the original submissions are maintained as part of the June P. Zintz Memorial Library collection. Additionally, this information is published quarterly in the WNYGS JOURNAL as they are received.

If you are interested in submitting or you have a question about the collection, please email

Society members and the general public can request digital or photocopy versions of a specific record for $1.00 per page.

New York State Land Records Project

We are happy to announce that WNYGS has joined forces with the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society (NYG&B) to promote and support its New York Land Records Project. This effort is the largest volunteer project ever undertaken to index NYS records. We are asking WNYGS members and members of the larger genealogical and historical community to participate in this online effort. By working together, we can help researchers more efficiently navigate and use NY land records (deeds and mortgages).

Specific to our area, digital images for the Western Region - Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming counties - are currently available for indexing/review. The Erie (County) Region will be launching in the near future. So are you ready to make a difference and join thousands of other volunteers as we proudly take on millions of names and entries? To learn more about the project including how you can register, visit the NYG&B project page at .

Past Programs:

Surname List

In an era before the online genealogy explosion, the Society maintained a member-submitted Surname List. Its purpose was to create an index of New York State connected surnames that members were researching. Within the list, each name was paired with a list of current and past member's numbers. Current members can use their annual WNYGS membership directory to determine an individual's membership status (active, expired, deceased) and available contact information (for active member). This information is now part of the Society archive maintained in the Zintz Memorial Library Collection.

Locality List

The locality list, similar to the Surname List, was established to help WNYGS members contact other Society members researching in the same location. This list was specifically for locations outside the target eight county of the Western New York. This information is now part of the Society archive maintained in the Zintz Memorial Library Collection.

1865 Census Index

As part of its continuing commitment to preservation and access, WNYGS previously organized an effort to index the 1865 New York State Census for the eight counties of Western New York. Please check the census index page to browse available information.
