October Member Program: "The Queen City of the East" and "The Young Lion of the West": Western NY Canal Boomtowns with Pamela Vittorio

Program Description: The presentation highlights how three generations of canals (1817–1918) shaped and influenced boomtowns of the western division, like Buffalo and Rochester, and the villages in between. Learn about various record types—many created by the canal commissioners—that document canal construction, boatbuilding, canal families, and merchants’ transactions, and how using these records can elevate your genealogical research.

She is an Associate Teaching Professor in the English Language Studies Department at the New School, (Parsons School of Design) in NYC, author of several ELT educational textbooks and video series, and a professional genealogist. Pamela acquired a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University, and a PLCGS in Canadian Studies (2020) and Librarianship (2019) from the National Institute of Genealogical Studies (Toronto U). Pamela attends GRIP, IGHR, SLIG yearly, and has been a speaker at many history and genealogy conferences, including NGS and NYSFHC. She has memberships in APG-NE and APG-NY, CNYGS, NEHGS, NYG&B, NGS, Ohio GS, Ontario GS, Old Saybrook Historical Society, CT, Quebec Genealogical e-Society, American Name Society; and is an active volunteer at several genealogical organizations and historical societies.
