Genealogy Workshop: Finding Passenger Lists 1620-1950s

Date: Saturday, September 16, 2017

Time: 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Location: Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, Central Branch, 1 Lafayette Circle, Buffalo, NY 14203. Sessions will take place in Grosvenor Room and Computer Lab.

Cost: Free and open to the public. Advanced registration is required.

Finding an immigrant’s passenger list is a difficult task considering the history of U.S. mass immigration. This class takes a hands-on approach using prepared examples which exhibit a variety of circumstances. Time will be allowed at the end of the workshop for personal research.

Topics to be covered:

  • An overview of U.S. passenger lists
  • Published sources of passenger lists and how to find them
  • Online sources of U.S. incoming and European outgoing passenger lists: Ancestry Library Edition, FamilySearch, NARA, others
  • Using European passenger lists to find U.S. passenger lists
  • Canadian border crossing records and passenger lists
  • U.S. genealogical sources of passenger list information
  • Finding a known passenger list in Ancestry Library Edition
