11:00 a.m. Using Genetic Genealogy to Explore Your Ancestry, Dr. Blaine Bettinger is a Ph.D biochemist with a concentration in genetics. He is also a practicing patent attorney specializing in intellectual property and an experienced family history researcher. He is the author of the popular blog "The Genetic Genealogist." Using his own family as a case study, Dr. Bettinger will outline how DNA technology can be combined with traditional "records research" to uncover family connections, both past and present. He will introduce basic DNA concepts (no science needed) and dicuss traditional and emerging DNA tools. He will explain how Autosomal DNA is enhancing the study of genealogy, and offer examples based on his own family. He will outline the pros and cons of the popular DNA test kits and address the issue of genetic testing and personal privacy.
12:00 noon Break for lunch. Coffee & light dessert will be provided. A bag lunch is an excellent idea as attendees then have more opportunity to talk genealogy with others.
